Council thanks residents who have submitted their koala sighting locations.

Council is continuing to work with koala conservation experts, including the University of the Sunshine Coast. USC has been granted research funding from the Noosa Biosphere Reserve Foundation® to assess the health of Noosa koala populations. USC researchers are using a specially-trained koala-tracking dog to help locate local koalas and collect their scats or ‘poos’ for analysis. Residents can request a visit by the koala tracking dog if they think that they may have koalas frequenting their property, by contacting Council or Daniel Nugent, University Researcher dnugent@usc.edu.au.

Council would like to thank the submitters for their comments on the Koala Conservation Plan. Council has now adopted the Plan. A number of actions such as the University Koala Health Mapping Project and identification of koala threat areas have already commenced. Council, with assistance from the Noosa community and koala experts, can continue to implement the Koala Conservation Plan. Here are some ways you can help:

    · Always keep domestic animals in control at all times

    · When driving, be on the look-out for koalas, observe koala road signs and reduce your speed in bushland areas

    · Protect koala food trees on your property and be involved with tree planting projects such as National Tree Day.

The University of the Sunshine Coast ‘Detection Dogs for Conservation’ is calling for expressions of interest from landholders who may be interested in helping with their research. If you would like ‘Maya’ or ‘Baxter’, the koala scat or ‘poo’ sniffing dogs to visit your property please Email Daniel Nugent dnugent@usc.edu.au
