Why is a facility Upgrade Plan needed?

A facility Upgrade Plan is required because, after 25 years of operation, the Noosa Aquatic Centre (NAC) has ageing infrastructure. This plan sets out a framework for upgrades and redevelopment over the next 20 years, to ensure we meet current and future needs.

The plan focuses on functionality, sustainability and evolving community needs within the site’s constraints.

How will the Plan be delivered?

This Upgrade Plan will be delivered over the next 20 years and is contingent on available funding.

A staged implementation allows for management of capital expenditure and access to external funding opportunities. There’s no commitment to deliver all proposed improvements, as council will follow a priority plan to deliver stages as funding becomes available.

When will the current changerooms and amenities be upgraded?

Amenities upgrades will be delivered in a staged approach. The initial focus is likely to be on  the 25m pool amenities building to service both pools. Once these improvements are in place, it allows subsequent upgrades to the existing amenities at a later date.

Why include unisex or inclusive amenities in the facility?

Unisex or inclusive amenities ensure the facility is accessible, welcoming, and respectful for everyone, including families, people with disabilities, and gender-diverse individuals.

This modern, family-friendly design would provide individual cubicles rather than open plan change areas, aligns with best practices, and future-proofs the facility to meet evolving community needs.

Why can’t a second 50m pool or an expansion of the 25m pool be included?

The site’s physical constraints and surrounding environmental protections prevent the addition of a 50m pool or expansion of the existing 25m pool.

The current footprint represents the maximum usable area, and the focus is to optimise and enhance the facilities within these boundaries.

Why isn’t a water slide included in the Plan?

This wasn’t prioritised by key stakeholders. Given the limited size of the area, environmental constraints and safety concerns, it would be impractical to include a water slide.

Other significant issues include maintenance costs, seasonal use and liability concerns along with compliance and insurance requirements.
