With Noosa Council re-established, there is a renewed focus on ensuring Noosa's enviable lifestyle is protected, further enhanced and not eroded by the stealth of poor decisions.

"The moment we compromise standards and accept poor outcomes, it is the beginning of losing what has made Noosa different," says Ross Sanderson, Design Manager, Noosa Council.

The green backdrop, our village feel and many subtleties that people now take for granted are the very things that are cherished by our residents and envied by our visitors. Some of these include:
  • Resisting the introduction of traffic lights and using roundabouts instead.
  • Minimising the proliferation of signage.
  • Providing cycling and walking networks.
  • Planting vegetation native to the particular site
  • Limiting building heights.
  • Greening of our road corridors to soften hard infrastructure.
  • Including natural materials in the design of infrastructure.
  • Enhancing local character rather than contriving environments.
  • Respecting and valuing our heritage buildings and places.
  • Building in harmony with the natural environment.
Over the years, many of these principles have translated into policies, guidelines, standards and an ethos that has enhanced Noosa Shire's character. The Design Principles publication aims to assist Council staff, developers, architects and business operators to easily understand what makes Noosa unique.

    Noosa's Painted Green Signage

    For many years Noosa Council pursued a policy of unique, green painted signage. Not only was the signage in a standard green background but also the ugly, galvanized steel posts were also painted green, as were timber posts when so used.

    The distinctive green painted signage and green painting of the ugly metal posts was uniquely Noosa, and although subtle was most distinctive to our locality.

    Also, the policy of lowering the height of parking signs in Hastings Street and other places seems to be lost, and reminded everyone we were somewhere where minimizing environmental impact does matter.
