Events Policy

In recent days and weeks we have heard a lot about too many visitors coming to this beautiful area of NOOSA and clogging up our roads and car parks. While this has some merit at certain time of the year (Christmas and Easter holiday seaso) there could be a potential simple solution.
Why not provide a sticker to each rate payer to attach to the windscreen so they can be identified as locals and being able to make full use of our area. Where as cars coming from outside the NOOSA Shire Council would have to park at perhaps the football or sports ground for a nominal fee and get transfer to Hasting street. This would ensure that especially during those busy time period the road are still flowing and not totally congested as is the case at the present moment.
I am keen to see if you think my logic has any merit.

I’ve lived in Noosa for 36yrs and loved the occasional event eg Noosa Tri. But now it’s gone above and beyond stupid. I can no longer find a park even on a scooter. I’m being forced to move out of my own area. There’s not enough down time between events. Tourists have commented to me personally that Noosa is now known as the Puket of Queensland, how embarrassing!

Pomona King of the Mountain Festival is such an iconic event and has been around for 40 plus years. As event organisers, the Cooroy Pomona Lions Club volunteers aims to provide the best event possible for the Noosa Hinterland. Our event is all about the community and all funds raised are put back into the community.

Red tape and the same event application process year after year is frustrating for our committee - just another process for our hardworking volunteers. The general format of the event stays the same.

My experience as chairperson over the past five year has been these issues.....the limited signage of our community event across the region.....we put out core flutes/banners once a year to promote our event....so its successful....so we can raise funds for our community, Noosa Council signage policy regarding events is very limited.

Also another bugbear is the no peg policy in Noosa Council Parks....to secure standard gazebos from Bunnings/BCF very unrealistic for stall holders and community groups in general. These pegs barely pierce the ground.

Noosa Council should provide all event holders plans of council parks and if there is any restrictions regarding power or water etc.

Events that have been approved by Council year after year should be able to have a simple application process that can be approved by the department, unless there are any major developments or changes to the event.

This format could be as simple as a two or three year agreement which could be emailed out to the organisation or applied online like the grant process. This could be a simple form for existing organisation to fill out and update relevant details. The organisation is still accountable to the terms and conditions of the Noosa Council per their guidelines.

Also on another note Noosa Council is very supportive the Pomona King of the Mountain Festival and we are very fortunate of our continue grant funding.

The Mayor and Councillors are also very supportive of our Pomona King of the Mountain Festival and this is evident in their attendance and support on the day.

I think Noosa does a great job with its events. However, please consider the rate paying locals who now have to look at the calendar to decide if visiting our own attractions is possible or a nightmare. Please respect the needs of locals to enjoy our home, whilst we share it with the visitors who come to enjoy it too.

Private events like the Noosa Triathlon is fantastic for Noosa.
Keep in mind this event is a Chinese owned mega profit-making company. It does not require financial support from council. If you do you're basically giving the Wanda group free money.

1. Do not let companies who are having a conference in Noosa use any beach or park for a corporate dinner/event.
2. Less events in Noosa which close off public roads.

It might be prudent to evaluate the currently approved events for their cost/benefit to the community. Some events have long lead times and long clean-up times and therefore have a greater impact on the residents than would be first expected. Do the "big" events actually deliver the highest value to the Noosa community - or do their "costs" actually significantly diminish their value? It would be very interesting to see the results of this cost/benefit analysis completed by an independent body. As a resident I feel that as a community we do need to have an "off-season" for the mental well being of the residents and the rehabilitation of the environment we are fortunate enough to live in and care for. Commercial interests will keep pushing for more access to Noosa - until we say "that's enough."

I feel that in recent years events numbers have increased substantially, mostly
of corse in the tourism slow season, creating an all round tourist season in Noosa and squeezing the locals out. I understand that this is occurring in many well loved tourist area, in affect cancelling the low season which is just as important. The low season allows for regeneration, assimilation and invigorating of the environment, the locals and the biosphere. It is of outmost importance that you don’t kill the golden goose by allowing too many events. It os also important that in allowing events (especially out door sporting events), that you are seen to be looking after the locals too by not approving anymore events that require road closures during business hours, as to not to be seen to be favouring event organisers over local traders and local traffic. Please ensure that there are a few weeks and weekends that are not inundated with events and some that are event free.
