Black Mountain landslide
The Black Mountain Road landslide is the biggest landslide on the Sunshine Coast in 30 years. Geotechnical assessments after the landslip determined much of the damage was below the surface, measuring as wide as a rugby league playing field and as deep as a five-storey building. Coming up with solutions to restore the area was complex and involved extensive geotechnical and engineering investigations.
The reconstruction will stabilise the road between depths between 5m to 25m across the 130m span and improve subsurface drainage. Early works began in late September 2023, with major construction starting in November. Construction is expected to finish in April 2025, weather and construction conditions permitting.

Share In your December 2022 update you state that works will commence in April 2023 on the landslide, but in the March 23 update you state there has been a two week delay - but the tender for works isn't going out until April 2023. This doesn't make sense. My questions are: 1. If the tender for works goes out in April 2023, how long will the prospective contactors have to respond? i.e how long will this process take? 2. How long will it take council to award the job to the successful tenderer? 3. When will work actually start on the landslide works? on Facebook Share In your December 2022 update you state that works will commence in April 2023 on the landslide, but in the March 23 update you state there has been a two week delay - but the tender for works isn't going out until April 2023. Thank you for your question. The tender package will be issued next week (week beginning 24 April 2023). Once this is live, we will issue the community a Design and Timing overview which includes further details relating to your question. Nina asked almost 2 years agoCurrent and Historical Works Undertaken for the February 2022 Disaster Recovery
For all the recovery works undertaken to date since the disaster event last year, Council has utilised its procurement arrangements for existing suppliers under contract to source materials.
None of the materials used in this immediate recovery work to date was sourced from Cordwells.
Upcoming Major Repair Works for Black Mountain Road and other Road Repairs
Council is about to commence a number of tender processes to seek contractors to undertake the larger repair works in the shire, including the critical works on Black Mountain Road.
As is required by Council under the Local Government Regulation 2012, this is an open market competitive tender process available to all businesses to submit a tender.
Council’s procurement processes require all tenderers to identify all their proposed suppliers and subcontractors to be used during construction, for Council’s consideration/approval. Additionally, Council approval is required under contract before proceeding with using any supplier or subcontractor.
Where significant concerns or risk exists regarding any suppliers, such as unresolved ongoing risk to community safety from a business’ operations, Council will exercise its right under the appropriate contract terms and conditions to require that the contractor nominate/use a different supplier before proceeding with any works.
Council recognise there is ongoing and unresolved community concern of safety risks regarding Cordwells operations and should any tender be received from Cordwells, Council will assess them (along with all other suppliers) in line with these principles when contracting any works.

Share Good morning, l did not receive the last 2 project news updates althought l had previously subscribed and had been receiving them. I also note once finding this page that only 20 people are subscribed, that would suggest that it is difficult to find, as it certainly didn't come up in my initial searches for the topic. ( Many older people on the mountain are not that tech savvy and is council is relying on this being their only form of communication then it will be not getting the message through. Does that low subscription rate not raise alarm bells for the effectiveness of this resource? Council has not addressed in Questions asked, several of the "difficult"questions asked by residents at the meeting at Federal school. I certainly for one find this incredibly disappointing. If council wants to build trust it needs to answer the "tough" stuff as well. With the region drying out there were questions about fire safety of residents, evacuation of residents. While council did not appear to minute that meeting l know that it was minutes by community and they have all those questions recorded. sywildflower asked almost 2 years agoThanks for your question. The Black Mountain Road Portal is open to any persons who wishes to find out updates on what is going on with the reconstruction projects affecting this area. Although we would like to see more subscribers, you do not need to subscribe to see any information. Council is currently investigating ways to highlight to users when new information is posted to the portal to help users to be more active is receiving messages. We strongly encourage interested community members to subscribe to the site as this will be how we can alert you to posts.
We understand that some residents have limited technical capacity and when we have spoken with them, we have confirmed their preferred method of communication (such as via family members or neighbours). The most recent survey offered for residents to have the Community Recovery and Resilience Officer reach out to them directly and this has been occurring. For residents who are closest to construction sites, you will receive letterbox drops advising of construction work occurring and, in some cases, we will reach out to directly and speak with them of the longer-term impacts to their specific property.
The questions raised at the last community meeting were addressed in an email sent directly to each members mailbox on 1st December 2022. In the attachment was a deck of the information we intended to present. Given this feedback, we will update the FAQ’S with a few more of the topics from this mailout to make it easier for the community to refer to.
