The revamped Sunshine Beach Skate Park has reopened and Council threw a local skaters a party to celebrate.
The fun kicked off on September 30 with live music, learn-to-skate classes, best-trick contests and skating demos.
Project Officer Dallas Bickley said skaters of all ages – both experienced and beginner skaters – attended the five-hour official opening celebrations.
The new-look park caters for skaters of all levels of experience, with the new design providing a range of new challenges.
Highlights include the Shire’s first enclosed – or in-ground – skate bowl.
Council redesigned the 13-year-old park in consultation with local skaters. The large existing steel half pipe remains.
Other key elements of the design include:
- A mini-half pipe.
- Rollover with A-frame hubba,
- Flat bank and jersey block.
- Love seat quarter pipe.
- A-frame and flat steel rails.
- The enclosed skate bowl will feature a taco-shaped corner.
The skate park reopened on September 16.

A major upgrade of Sunshine Beach Skate Park will deliver the shire’s first enclosed – or in-ground – skate bowl.
It’s among a list of elements skaters asked for during last year’s community consultation.
Project officer Dallas Bickley said every surface of the new skate park was designed with skating in mind, including the new concrete seats.
“The existing park is more than 13 years old, so it’s due for an upgrade. The revamped design will give local skaters a new challenge,” he said.
“Resurfacing of the park plus the addition of water taps were other popular requests from skaters during last year’s community consultation. This upgrade will deliver all of that.”
The new park will cater for both street and transition skaters.
Key elements include:
· A mini-half pipe.
· Rollover with A-frame hubba,
· Flat bank and jersey block.
· Love seat quarter pipe.
· A-frame and flat steel rails.
· The enclosed skate bowl will feature a taco-shaped corner.
The existing large steel half pipe will remain.
Council will start work in June, 2017.
“The project will take around 10 weeks to complete, weather permitting and we’ll have to close the park for that time. We appreciate skaters’ patience while we finish the project. But it will be worth the wait,” Mr Bickley said.
Meanwhile, Council is pleased to assist the delivery of a Revolutions workshop series through its Community Grants program. The free workshops, held at local skate parks between now and late September, make learning to skateboard fun, safe and easy.

Over 100 people attended the Sunshine Beach Skate Day to provide
their thoughts on what the Skate Park redevelopment should involve. Initial
reviews of the surveys completed on the day indicate that skaters like the vert
ramp most and dislike the existing rough surface of the concrete. Ideas for
improvements were varied, with most requesting better shade and a better water
bubbler. The main concern emerging from skaters for the redevelopment is to
ensure the finished surface of the park is smooth and non-abrasive. Council
will be working with designers Convic to consider the ideas generated from the
Skate Day into the final skate park design.
