Council is currently conducting a study to assess the provision of indoor sports and active recreation facilities across Noosa. Consultants Otium Planning has been engaged to assist Council with this process. The study will follow an evidenced-based decision-making process to understand the current and future needs of our community and local sporting clubs for indoor sport facilities.
Why this project is needed now
The major factors that have contributed to the need to better understand current and future needs of our community include:
A general increase in population in the Shire.
A need to meet the needs of a broader range of users and improve accessibility for all.
An increase in participation in traditional and new indoor sports in Noosa, including basketball, pickleball and volleyball.
Current indoor facilities such as Noosa Leisure Centre and school halls are at capacity or not able to meet demand.
An increasing trend of participation in ‘informal’ sports and activities such as group fitness and social sports.
An increase in the frequency of inclement weather conditions causing traditionally outdoor sports to seek indoor training facilities more often
Rapidly evolving technologies that change the way people participate and engage in sport such as exergaming, simultaneous events, virtual reality and Esports.
The project aims to collate and assess community feedback and broader demand and trend analysis to plan indoor sports facilities for the Shire to meet future needs.
