Why we need a Master Plan
The Noosaville Foreshore is a cherished space for locals, tourists, and the Kabi Kabi Peoples, who maintain deep cultural connections with the Noosa River. It's a hub for diverse activities like walking, cycling, swimming, rowing and yachting, fishing, picnics, shopping, and dining, with access to ferry stops and boat rentals.
However, our beloved foreshore is facing some big challenges:
- Ageing infrastructure along the foreshore and other facilities require upgrades.
- It is estimated this would cost ratepayers at least $10 million just to maintain current facilities over the coming decades. A master plan allows us to seek funding from alternative sources, not just Council rates.
- Our community is growing, our social/physical needs are evolving, and we need to cater for this.
- We are experiencing erosion, increasing heatwaves, flooding and major weather events, which impact the foreshore as identified in the Coastal Hazards Adaptation Plan and Climate Change Response Plan.
A Master Plan for the Noosaville Foreshore helps us plan to upgrade, protect and improve what we love about this two-kilometre long public space. The Master Plan will help Council to plan and access external funding for much-needed upgrades including more accessible park benches and seating, wider pathways, adequate shade, playgrounds and better toilet facilities.
This is just the first step in working with you to ensure we have a foreshore that remains the great place we all cherish for generations to come.
As we get external funding, there will be additional opportunities for community engagement to do detailed design for a specific area of the foreshore, such as a playground or pathways. This comprehensive plan helps Council to budget for future maintenance and upgrades and to secure external funding over the lifetime of the plan.
About the Noosaville Foreshore Infrastructure Master Plan
The Infrastructure Master Plan outlines the future direction for the Noosaville Foreshore for the next 20+ years. Further design studies, approvals and careful staging would be required in future years to refine these conceptual designs in detail with the community, prior to the commencement of any on-site construction works. Our existing Noosaville Foreshore Land Use Master Plan has also provided the basis to inform our future infrastructure planning for the precinct.
