Noosa - Getting Waste Sorted

What is important to you in managing waste now and in the future? Noosa Council wants to hear your views.

A lot has changed since 2015 when we adopted our current waste arrangements, including more ambitious recycling targets set by the state, and the availability of new technology to improve recycling and divert more waste from landfill.

We want to know if you feel confident knowing what to recycle or would like to know more, and whether you’re interested in new and more environmentally friendly ways of disposing of organic waste and at what cost.

Share your thoughts by completing the online survey or come along to one of the community pop-up events (see Key Dates for more info).

When you put your bin at the end of the driveway to be collected each week, do you ever consider how long it takes for rubbish to breakdown? A banana peel buried at the landfill could take up to 2 years, a can of coke up to 200 years, and a glass jar up to 1 million years!

In 2021/22, of the 84,000 tonnes of waste received in Noosa Shire, 41% was diverted from being buried at the landfill. This is a good result, but the Qld State Government target is for 61% diversion by 2025.

Items diverted from the Noosa landfill included mattresses, garden waste, batteries, metal and more...

Noosa's commercial operators and householders have been doing a fantastic job at recycling with as little as 5-6% contamination in the yellow lid recycling bins (the Qld State average is 15%). Well done Noosa keep up the great work!

There is a lot of compostable organic material (kitchen scraps/garden clippings) in Noosa's general waste bins (over 40%) and when organic matter is buried in the landfill it has no oxygen and gives off methane gas which is 28x more potent a greenhouse gas than C02.
