Noosa Council announces Floating Land 2017

At March's Noosa Council meeting, Councillors considered a report into the options for delivering Floating Land in 2017 and committed their support for this signature cultural event. They have requested staff to now commence planning for Floating Land 2017.

In developing a proposed program for Floating Land 2017 staff have undertaken a review of past Floating Land events and considered input from a wide range of stakeholders from the past two iterations of Floating Land. The proposed program aims to meet community expectations, maintain the reputation of this signature event and be achievable within a reasonable budget and the timeframe available.

The theme for Floating Land 2017 will be “Lost & Found” and it will be programmed over a five-week period from 8th September – 15th October 2017.

The major components of Floating Land 2017 will be:

Commissioned Works:

Council will commission at least ten creative works to be installed primarily along the Noosa river foreshore from Tewantin to Noosa Woods from 16th September to 02nd October. Other locations within the Noosa Biosphere will be considered provided they fit the overall program and are logistically feasible.

Selection and engagement of the artists will be undertaken by an experienced curatorial panel through an expression of interest process which will open on 03rd April 2017. The panel will seek artists of proven ability to deliver new works responsive to the “Lost and Found” theme in an outdoor context.

Artcycle:

2017 will see Noosa Council introduce the Artcycle Art Prize. Inspired by Council’s Towards Zero Waste strategy, this component of Floating Land will be offered by Noosa Regional Gallery in partnership with Council’s Eumundi Road Resource & Recovery Centre.

Entrants will be invited to find the artistic potential amongst the disused and discarded items in the tip shop and other second-hand centres around Noosa Shire. The artworks will highlight the creative ability to discover a new future for household items that have served their initial purpose. Shortlisted artworks will be exhibited at a Noosa Council venue from 8th September – 15th October 2017 and prizes will be offered.

Artcycle will include a companion program for children to educate them about the issue of waste through art.

Boreen Point Community Component:

The connection between practising artists, the community and the artworks is an essential component of Floating Land. This will occur in the unique environment at Boreen Point on the shores of Lake Cootharaba. This component will be delivered by the community with a $15,000 contribution from Council. The expression of Interest process to select an organisation to deliver the Boreen Point community component will open on 03rd April.

Digital Art Trail:

In keeping with the innovative history of Floating Land, a digital trail will be introduced in 2017 which will guide visitors along the sculptural exhibition, providing enriched content and enhancing the overall experience.

Public Program:

A diverse public program will be offered by Council and partnering agencies during the five-week period.

Satellite Events:

Businesses, community organisations and individuals may wish to consider holding a satellite event during the five-week period that links to Floating Land. Consideration will be given to including these satellite events within the main program.
