Floating Land 2017 "Lost and Found" commissioned artist announcement

Council has commissioned 15 artists to create the environmental art installations in this year’s Floating Land festival.

The array of pieces will be displayed along Noosa River between Tewantin and Noosa Woods.

Manager of Libraries and Galleries, Kerri Contini, said some of the artists were well known to Floating Land, while for others, 2017 would be their first Floating Land event.

“Floating Land is an integral part of Noosa Council’s events calendar and it highlights the intricate and often thought-provoking relationship between art and the environment,” Ms Contini said.

"In creating each piece, the artists must respond to an environmental theme and ensure the techniques and materials they use are environmentally sensitive.

“We aim to make an impression on the people who observe the art, but leave no mark on the environment.”

Artists will use a variety of mediums as they respond to this year’s ‘lost and found’ theme.

“Artists have responded in a variety of ways in creating their works: reflecting on lost species and cultures or celebrating found objects and new technology, or the rediscovery of traditions,” Ms Contini said.

“We hope the high quality range of artistic talents will delight visitors and stimulate discussion.”

This year’s event will be particularly exciting with a diverse public program featuring community events, artist talks, public workshops, children’s activities and the launch of a digital app.

“The app will give visitors a unique opportunity to bridge the gap between the environment around them and the digital realm,” Ms Contini said.

Floating Land is a biennial arts festival of exhibitions, events and workshops in nature about nature, the highlight of which is the sculptures created in outdoor natural settings.

The twelve successful artworks will be on display from September 23 to October 2.
