Hilton Esplanade Improvement Project

Hilton Esplanade is a much-loved and peaceful riverside street in Tewantin, valued for its natural beauty and relaxed character.

Many parts of the street, foreshore reserve and underlying infrastructure are showing signs of age, and the foreshore is at high risk from climate change impacts including river flooding, sea level rise and storm tide inundation. Council recognises the area needs thoughtful rejuvenation to keep it safe, functional and enjoyable for residents and visitors well into the future.

Between March and May 2026, Council sought community input to better understand how the area is used, what matters most, and where improvements may be needed. This early feedback focused on a range of potential street improvements, which may include:

  • stormwater drainage upgrades
  • foreshore resilience
  • refreshed street amenity.

Thank you to everyone who took part. Read below for the Phase 1 summary and learn how your feedback helped shape future design options and priorities.

Funding Statement

These works are proudly supported by funding from the Queensland Government’s Cycle Network Local Government Grants Program and QCoast2100 funding from the Queensland Government and delivered by the Local Government Association of Queensland, in association with Noosa Council.

What we heard in from the community

Between March and May 2026, more than 450 people shared their views on Hilton Esplanade through an online survey, two resident workshops, three community pop-ups and written submissions.

The clearest message was to keep Hilton Esplanade natural, quiet and local.

Protecting the health of the river and foreshore was the community's highest priority, with strong support for nature-based solutions that address erosion. People also raised drainage and road condition, safe and accessible movement through the area, and maintaining river access, parking and recreation, all while preserving the relaxed, informal character so many value.

Above all, the community told us how much the area is valued for its mature trees, open foreshore, easy river access and peaceful atmosphere, and how important it is to protect these qualities.

We listened

April 14, 2026 2:00 PM - May 25, 2026 2:00 PM

Thank you to everyone who participated in the first phase of community engagement. Whether you completed the survey, attended a workshop, visited a community pop-up or made a written submission, your feedback has helped shape the next stage of the Hilton Esplanade Improvement Project. Together, you've helped us better understand how the community uses and values Hilton Esplanade, and what matters most as planning continues.

Community feedback confirmed two key priorities. The project will now progress through two complementary workstreams, each with its own timeline and engagement approach. Living Foreshore: design and construction of the pilot project, scheduled for completion by March 2027. Safe Street & Drainage: continued concept development and detailed design, with further community consultation as designs are refined. Detailed design is expected to be completed by February 2028.

Read the engagement reports above to learn more about what we heard from the community.
