From Waste to Resource: Draft Waste Plan 2023 - 2028

Consultation has concluded

Thank-you to everyone who provided input into the development of the Waste Plan.

The development of the Waste Plan involved a two-part consultation process from February 13th February-26th March and 18th August-10th September 2023.

Phase 1 consultation was designed to collect valuable feedback on community and stakeholder perspectives regarding waste management and waste minimisation. The objective was to utilise this input as a foundation for the formulation of the Draft Waste Plan.

Phase 2 consultation was aimed at gathering additional insights and perspectives on the Draft Waste Plan itself.

In total, 828 surveys were received over phase 1 and 2 consultation. This figure encompasses 624 surveys collected during phase 1 consultation, focusing on community values, and an additional 204 surveys in phase 2 consultation, focusing on the Draft Waste Plan.

Insights include:

  • 78% of survey respondents stated that protecting our environment (removing litter from rivers and oceans) was very important to them.
  • 85% of survey respondents are concerned about organic compostable material currently going to landfill.
  • The main factor that impacts people's ability to recycle more is not being able to find a recycling bin when out in public.
  • The main thing that would help with recycling is clear information on packaging about what can be recycled.
  • 63% of survey respondents support the Draft Waste Plan vision.
  • 68% of survey respondents support the waste hierarchy (avoid, reuse, recycle, recover and dispose as a last resort) to be the guiding principles of the Waste Plan.

The final Waste Plan will be presented to Noosa Council for endorsement in October 2023.
